Daum, Rachael, a resident of Ridgewood for more than 28 years, passed away on December 26th 2009 in New York City, her place of residence for the past four years. The cause of death was cancer.
Ms. Daum, throughout most of her professional career, was an arts educator with direct responsibility in the Ridgewood Schools for developing the theatre and dance curricula. She worked with the music and visual arts programs in creating the prestigious summer theatre program for students in grades 4-12 and the annual Celebration of the Arts at Ridgewood High School. On her retirement in 2005, the RHS Dance Studio was named after Ms. Daum.
In July of her retirement year Ms. Daum moved to New York City to continue her work as an arts educator and became the special programs associate for Young Playwrights Inc., an organization founded by Stephen Sondheim to identify and nurture young talent. Ms. Daum administered a program for gifted high school students who showed early focus on playwriting.
Ms. Daum spent many years involved in the arts as a teacher, a pianist, an acting teacher and a choral director for Ridgewood High School and the Unitarian Society of Ridgewood. Born in Carbondale, Illinois, Ms. Daum lived in San Francisco, Ca., Chicago, Ill., Terre Haute, Indiana, Palo Alto, Ca., Austin, Texas, Ridgewood, NJ and New York, NY. She often noted how grateful she was for the breadth of places she had lived and also how grounded she always felt as a Midwesterner who had the courage to leave but also the heart to never forget her heritage.
Ms. Daum is survived by her son Evan Daum of Los Angeles and her daughter and son in law, Meghan Daum and Alan Zarembo, also of Los Angeles. She also leaves her husband Glen Daum of New York. Brief services will be held on January 3, 2010 at 3 PM at the Unitarian Society of Ridgewood, 113 Cottage Pl. Ridgewood, NJ 07450. In lieu of flowers donations in her memory to the Visiting Nurse Service of New York Hospice Care 1250 Broadway New York, NY 10001 would be appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to the C. C. Van Emburgh Funeral Home, Ridgewood. www.vanemburgh.com
